Excision (2012)

Starring: AnnaLynn McCord, Jeremy Sumpter, Matthew Gray Gubler, & Traci Lords Director: Richard Bates Jr. - Rating: NR - Score: 2 1/2 Stars I have seen some strange movies in my time, but Excision has got to be near the top. This is the story of Pauline (AnnaLynn McCord), a dark outcast who likes dead things. She likes to play with them and dissect them. Her naive parents think that she's going to be a doctor, but the truth is she's closer to a psychopath than anyone realizes. The dark humor in the film was pretty great, as was Jeremy Sumpter, who has always been a favorite of mine, but that's about it. Excision is a film that's supposed to be disturbing, but the truth is it's just disgusting. Straight blood and guts for the sake of blood and guts. There is no rhyme or reason to the story and that's the most disturbing part. We just see a lot of Pauline, by herself, with her thoughts, doing the things she does that make her "that weird girl." A...

The Loved Ones

Starring: Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy, John Brumpton, & Jessica McNamee Director: Sean Byrne - Rating: R - Score: 2 Stars I love Independent films, especially in the genre of horror. A good independent horror film is better than anything you will ever see in theaters. Unfortunately, in order to find the good ones, you need to weed through a lot of strange and terrible movies first. The Loved Ones is an Australian film that had an interesting premise. Lola (Robin McLeavy) is far from the popular girl in school, and she knows that he crush on the most popular kid in school, Brent (Xavier Samuel), likely won't go anywhere. With prom coming up, Lola only has eyes for Brent, who is planning to attend with his girlfriend, but before that happens, Lola and her father kidnap Brent and bring him to their homemade version of the prom. I loved how twisted this film was, from the corny jokes to the extreme gore, but The Loved Ones was extremely predictable and really doesn't go fa...

Pet Sematary (2019)

Starring: Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, & John Lithgow Director: Kevin Kolsch & Dennis Widmyer - Rating: R - Score: 4 Stars For me, one of the hardest things to do is to write a review for a remake, when I've already seen the original film. How is it that you can review it or even watch it, without making immediate comparisons to the original? For those of you unfamiliar with the story, Dr. Louis Creed and his family move to a small town in the woods of Maine. They buy a huge property, which in the back has an old pet cemetery, but beyond that lies something far more sinister, an ancient Indian burial ground, where it is said, those buried there, can return. Pet Sematary was a great film and an even better book, but it's the kind of story where there isn't much you can leave out, and there isn't a whole lot you can change. That being said, the majority of the film is almost a shot for shot remake of the original, begging the question, what's the point? The ...

Shadow (2009)

Starring: Jake Muxworthy, Karina Testa, & Nuot Arquint Director: Frederico Zampaglione - Rating: NR - Score: 3 stars For years I'd heard how twisted and truly horrific Italian horror films were, but I never saw one. I just can't get into something when I have to sit there reading subtitles for two hours. That's why I was excited when I heard about Shadow, an American movie written and directed by Italian horror filmmakers. The film is centered on David (Jake Muxworthy), a soldier who has just come back from Iraq, who is on a European bike trip. David is looking to clear his mind with his favorite activity, when he comes across a beautiful woman being harassed by hunters. He intervenes, gets the girl, and in the process becomes a target. That is when this film takes a big one-eighty, because during the chase, they enter a creepy area of the woods, run into something far more sinister, and all wind up in the same boat. I've said it time and time again, today's...

Under The Bed (2012)

Starring: Jonny Weston, Gattlin Griffith, & Musetta Vander Director: Steven C. Miller - Rating: R - Score: 1 1/2 Stars I watch mostly independent horror films, because when it comes to this genre, Hollywood is just too afraid to try anything different. When you see a horror film in theaters, it seems like all you get is either a slasher film with a ton of blood, a serial killer movie with lots of gore, or a supernatural thriller with nothing but jump scares. Real horror is supposed to be scary and is supposed to be something that sticks with you, but it's rare that a film can do that anymore, and Under The Bed is no exception. I can sum up this film by simply saying it's an hour of goosebumps, ten minutes of ridiculously over the top gore, and a whole five minutes of stranger things, thrown in at the end, for an attempt at originality. Not only was this a horror movie that I would call boring, but the cast was just plain annoying and written to be beyond stupid. If not ...

House of Bodies

Starring: Terrance Howard, Queen Latifah, & Peter Fonda Director: Alex Merkin - Rating: NR - Score: 1 1/2 First of all how does a movie like this manage to get a cast like this? It boggles the mind that these actors would actually be willing to take part in such a shit show, but they did, and it was an epic disaster. Inside a house once owned by a serial killer, college girls looking for money, live, on camera 24/7, in a place where anything can happen. Ya see, they are actually part of a fetish porn website, where they can become victims at anytime and people pay big money to see this. Unbeknownst to them, the serial killer isn't dead, and one night he returns to the house, where the killings become all too real and are streamed live on the web for the whole world to see. Plain and simple this is a mildly pornographic slasher film and a bad one at that. Some big names have some small roles that are honestly beneath them, and not at all worthy of their time. Not only is the...

Bleed (2016)

Starring: Chelsey Crisp, Riley Smith, & Michael Steger Director: Tripp Rhame - Rating: NR - Score: 2 1/2 With a baby on the way, Sarah (Chelsey Crisp) and Matt (Michael Steger) decide to have some friends over to celebrate their new home and new family. It should have been a quiet day, until Sarah's unique brother Eric (Riley Smith) shows up. Eric is a drifter and a ghost hunter, whose bad behavior and odd ball girlfriend threaten to ruin the whole event. Eventually Eric gets into a discussion about what he does, and wanting to silence the skeptics, suggests a ghost hunt at an abandoned nearby prison, that's supposedly haunted. Well how could a woman who is six months pregnant not agree to hike through the woods to a haunted abandon building in the middle of nowhere? That part was a little ridiculous, but the backstory of the prison and the family dynamic actually wasn't too bad, especially for a B-horror movie without any big names attached to it. However that is w...

Dark Summer

Starring: Keir Gilchrist, Grace Phipps, & Peter Stormare  Rating: 2 out of 5 stars The best actors in Hollywood need to get that big role before their career can take off. No matter how good they are, until they find that role, they won't be a household name and are forced to take whatever roles they can get. Even megastars, like Chris Pratt got his start on a low rated CW drama, and did B-movies for a decade before he was cast as Star Lord, this is the position Keir Gilchrist finds himself in now. Gilchrist is an exceptional young actor, who always gives his best, but without that big role on his resume, he's forced to take jobs like this one. Dark Summer follows Daniel, (Gilchrist) a 17 year old who has recently been sentenced to house arrest for stalking a girl from his school. To make matters worse, his parents are away for the summer and Daniel is all alone. As boredom ware away at him mind, Daniel starts to see things and wonders if he's being punished for his c...

Mother's Day (2010)

Starring: Rebecca De Mornay, Patrick Flueger, & Warren Kole Rating: 3 out of 5 stars From the Director of Saw 2, 3, & 4 comes an even scarier film, a story that is not only brutal, but also entirely possible. Three recently released prisoners are back to their old tricks, as they have just robbed a bank and escaped a shoot out with the police. With no where else to go, they flee to a familiar place, their mother's house, only while they were away, she lost that house to the bank and it had been re-sold. The trio stumbles right into the new owners house warming party and quickly take them as hostages. These boys are brutal, but they aren't very smart, not knowing what the next step is, they do they only thing they can think of and call their dear old mother for advice. Mother's Day is your typical film about hostages held at bay, trying to escape the brutal hold of their captors, with one exception, Rebecca De Mornay, a veteran actress of these types of films. De M...

Sinister (2012)

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, & James Ransone Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Original ideas in horror are hard to come by given the nature of the genre. The fans all want to be scared, some want blood and gore, and do we ever really want to see a happy ending? The idea behind Sinster was simple, lets give fans a little bit of everything and see how they react. Seeking peace and solitude, real crime writer, Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), moves his family to the country, unaware that the house he's living in has a checkered past. That is until he finds an old movie projector with 8mm films, that will horrify the man to his core. Having children as the perpetrators of these crimes was my favorite part of the film, I love it when horror movies do that, because what could be scarier than an evil child. You take the most innocent thing in the world, turn it evil, and once that happens what can you do about it? Would you be able to shoot a kid? So how do you stop them? The idea is...

Fangs (2002)

Starring: Tracy Nelson, Whip Hubley, & Corbin Bernsen Rating: 3 out of 5 stars When it comes to horror, either you get it or you don't. Those who don't, think it's all about blood, monsters, and scaring people, but in fact there are actually five distinct forms of horror. Films like Fangs are bad, and they are that way on purpose. There are franchises and even entire production companies that are dedicated to making films like this, where the story is insane, the effects are terrible, the acting is ridiculous, and it's all done on purpose, because it's supposed to make laugh just as much, if not more than it's supposed to make you cringe, that's the point! Fangs is somewhat different in two ways, first it was produced by a major film company and second the film wasn't all that bad. Basically some bats at a university escape in the lab and get into some chemicals they shouldn't have. As a result, they become super aggressive and wreak havoc on a...

Stormhouse

Starring: Grahame Fox, Martin Delaney, Grant Masters Rating: 1 out of 5 stars I don't know what in the hell possessed me to rent this film, and why I thought there was even a possibility that it would be even close to good with such a stupid plot, but I went there, and I'm sorry I did. Apparently, the British military has nothing better to do then to build a big chamber underground, at one of it's secret military bases, for the purpose of summoning and imprisoning a ghost. Once they do, they can't possibly understand why the ghost is so angry and is killing people, so they bring in a psychic from The United States, because I guess there aren't any in the UK? She does her talking and tries to make a connection, when inevitably the ghost escapes and runs a muck on the base. This is the kind of poorly written ridiculous story that gives horror movies a bad name. If this were the only kind of horror I'd ever been subjected to, I'd think horror movies sucked to...

Awaken (2014)

Starring: Natalie Burn, Vinnie Jones, & Darryl Hannah Rating: 2 out of 5 stars For a small, independent, real-life horror film, Awaken has a lot of pieces to it's story, there really is a lot going on, in what initially seemed like a cut and dry story. If this film had been done a bit differently, and if it's impressive cast had been used for more than simple cameos, this may have been a much better film. The story begins with Billie (Natalie Burn) waking up on an island, being chased by strangers, and rescued by another group of strangers. She comes to learn that everyone in her group of rescuers woke up as she did, and appear to be hunted for sport. Billie wants to escape to one of the nearby cluster of islands, but learns that attempts have been made, and no one has ever come back, but Billie is a military brat and refuses to accept that. The story here is very well written, especially for this type of film, but everything is so anti-climatic. Just about every scene tu...

Dead Souls (2012)

Starring: Jesse James, Magda Apanowicz, & Bill Mosely Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars Dead Souls is every adopted childs biggest fantasy and worst nightmare roled into one. On his 18th birthday, Johnny Petrie (Jesse James) finds out that he's adopted and there is an inheritance waiting for him. Despite being told not to go back to his home town, Johnny does any way, and learns another secret about his past, one that will put a target on his back. Dead Souls is another film produced for the little known NBC owned cable horror network, Chiller. Because these films are made for TV, they have to be somewhat toned down, something that is always going to hinder a good horror film. For this reason, Chiller films usually come down to two things; the cast and realism. The filmmakers can't use the gore and violence associated with most modern horror films, so it comes right down to how believable or frighting is the story? That brings us to Dead Souls, which has a fairly creepy backst...
